The Automotive History of EDI
, a 32-page publication, was created by an international team of experts from AIAG, the Group for the Improvement of the
Relationships in the Automotive Industry (GALIA-France), the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA),
the Japanese Automotive Parts Industries Association (JAPIA), the Society of Motor Manufacturers and
Traders (SMMT-United Kingdom), and the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA-Germany).
In addition, representatives from Trinary, E-Business Consulting, Oracle Corp., General Motors Corp., QAD and
Toyota contributed to the publication.
Intended as a summary of EDI's evolution in the automotive industry, the document was created to educate the reader on past and present lessons learned and to assist the global industry in moving forward wisely and expeditiously in the development of next-generation EDI iterations. Simply put, EDI is the exchange of structured data in a standard format that is machine-readable by both customer and supplier. EDI has enhanced customer/supplier communications by eliminating the errors and inefficiencies caused by manual re-keying of data from paper documents, and standardization has reduced the number of electronic formats that users must handle. Communicating customer requirements can now be accomplished in a matter of seconds rather than days, depending on volume of data, batch cycles and trading partner preferences. EDI has contributed significantly to the improvement of information throughput by reducing transaction times. The download includes a look at how EDI added value, reduced cost and improved throughput in the automotive business. Additionally, it captures the evolvement of EDI on an international level, reveals important factors influencing decisions, and explains the user benefits. The publication includes chapters explaining the EDI process (cost, speed, quality and inventory reduction); touches on EDIFACT and the Joint Automotive Data Model; and concludes with EDI: The Next Generation. In looking at the future of EDI, the document discusses how XML schema seems to be the best syntax to support application-to-application (A2A) and to connect the enterprise business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C). The ultimate goal, of course, is seamless connectivity across the entire enterprise trading partner chain. |

EDI Trading Partner Implementation follows these general steps:
Buyer and Seller contact is established at the business level. Agreement is reached as far as business rules and legal issues. Process is handed over to the respective EDI organizations. EDI information is exchanged; typically using a WebSite as information source and a WebForm to provide necessary information. Partners follow a scripted testing process. Partnership is established when the transaction(s) are moved to their respective daily production systems. NOW!
