EDI MAPPING

ec-bp.com The Forum for Supply Chain Integration

ec-bp was established in 2005 as the advocate for lowering the barriers to the adoption of EDI, and our email newsletter has been published every month since that time. Our focus has expanded beyond EDI to encompas the full gamut of supply chain practices and technologies. In addition, our readership has grown to become the largest of any similarly focused publication, and has expanded to include more than 90,000 professionals involved in nearly every aspect of the supply chain.

Today’s supply chain is more than simple transport of EDI documents. The complexity of maintaining compliance with trading partners, managing the ever increasing amount of data, and analyzing that data to drive constant improvement in processes and service take supply chain professionals far beyond the basics of mapping EDI documents.

EDI incorporates standard layouts for all business documents. However, there are different standards available. The decision as to which standard to adopt is usually determined by what is already in general use within your business sector and by mutual agreement with your trading partner.

There are four main technical standards:
UN/EDIFACT - the main standard supported by the UN
ANSI X12 - common in USA, Canada and Australia
TRADACOMS - predominantly used in the UK
ODETTE - developed in the UK for the motor industry.
Each standards body publishes definitions of the documents, which may be exchanged electronically. An EDI message represents common business documents and its definition specifies the content and sequence of the data to be included.

EDI Directories

For a long time, I have dreamed of an EDI Trading Partner Directory. When I went into a new company, I usually built my own. The platform:software is not the issue, it is all about content. I had great information on current partners, good information on proposed partners, and no information on potential partners.

There are now a lot of good sources that are available that I will bring out later. I had a finite number of data elements that I wanted in my database (EDI documents, VANs, contacts and more) and I wanted to be able to sort them and pick them. Refreshing my data depended on importing from where ever I could obtain data.

I have worked for companies with 100s of EDI customers, most went through a VAN. Periodically I used to find out about an existing customer that was EDI capable, but that I was not aware of.

To see what directories are available, I picked a few companies and decided to see what kind of directories I might find facts in. My career has been with logistics, manufacturing, retailing and food. Logistics is a separate exercise, so here are the sample industries I picked: a hardware chain, an appliance manufacturer, a department store, a supermarket chain, a food manufacturer, an electronics supplier, a clothing supplier, an auto supplier.

Required Attire for a Remote Workforce

Ever wonder how your telecommuting colleagues really live? Turns out, many of them actually do work in their pajamas. They also tend to love their work-life balance – to the point where they’d take a pay cut to maintain the status quo. This is a “must read” for both remote workers and for their office-bound managers.

Seven Keys to Managing Outsourced Mapping Services

Finding process efficiency in business is no longer on the wish list, but a mandatory responsibility of management. Even with the great gains that we as an EDI department give to the organization, the mandate to find more cost effective methods in operations has not passed us by. This in turn has lead many EDI teams to utilize third parties to handle some portions of their daily function. In my previous post, I began to discuss outsourcing the mapping function of EDI, and will wrap up with seven strategies that I have found to be useful when managing a third party mapping team.

Supply Chain Management Control Towers

Control towers are used in many industries for different purposes: airports and railroads use them for traffic control; power plants have control rooms to monitor operations; and third party logistics providers use them to track transportation activities. These are places where operations run well. Why not a

What is EDI? - A Definition and a History

Your first thought might be: “I know already or I wouldn't be reading this publication”. Yes, we will give you the “schoolbook” definition. We will even tell you a brief history of EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), but our real purpose is to give you the Year 2013 definition of EDI; and back it up with an expert opinion.Developed in the United States in the mid-1960s, the idea of what became known as EDI today originated with a group of railroad companies.

Misconceptions About Cloud Computing

Most of us are in the "supply chain" somewhere (logistics, EDI, procurement, da de da) but we keep learning and see that Cloud computing is great for us. But we keep seeing all kind of things that warn us about the Cloud, tell us of dangers in the Cloud and make us concerned if we are going in the right direction. Is it real or is it just our IT people concerned about their status quo? You know: huge rooms full of servers, rows and rows of cubicles full of administrators. I am going to sift through a whole basket of stories on the Cloud that relate to Supply Chain Management. I will try and pick the best.

I am calling this an “Op-Ed” View because my usual stomping grounds is the land of Material Releases, JIT Schedules, etc. where you have a different (easier?) change process. I am also going to try and paint a Global picture of how the purchase order change process occurs outside of North America.

B2B Data and Analyzing (The Challenge)

B2BMarketing.com states that companies have lots of data but no data destination in mind. B2B firms are now collecting more data than ever before: from social media, marketing resource management, customer resource management. But they need to have a strategy.

Business intelligence (BI) consists of software applications which analyze an organization's raw data. The BI routine includes data mining, online analytical processing, querying and reporting. The result improves decision making, cut costs and identifies new business opportunities. BI goes beyond both corporate reporting and being a data warehouse. It is user-run rather than depending on the IT department to run. Implementation hurdles include technical (using the software) and culture shock to the users; but the biggest challenge is making sure you have clean and consistent data that users trust.
