All About the Land Rover Land Rover celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1998. Here's some history on this great vehicle: 1948: 80" model introduced at the Amsterdam Motor Show. bulletproof could go anywhere Customers wanted an agricultural vehicle: so in 1954 the 86" and later, the 107" were designed. By 1959, with a quarter-million Land Rovers built, the Series I was replaced by the Series II. This increased size, comfort, style and performance. By 1966, production had past a half million. Rovers were rolling over tough terrain that nobody else would even think of driving on. In 1970, Land Rover engineers did something radical in off-road vehicle industry. They created the Range Rover! It was, of course, for serious off-road use. But it could be hosed clean inside and out) and be luxury too. This ahead of its time concept was the real pioneer of the "luxury SUV". In 1971, the Series III was introduced. It was followed in 1971 by the 101". They used a British Army gun tractor design and customers loved it. It became a huge, overbuilt long-range camper. By 1976, all-time Land Rover sales crossed 1 million. Not impressive by Detroit standards, but it showed the loyalty of the Land Rover fraternity worldwide. By 1988, Range Rovers were coming off back roads and out of summer "cottages" into the mainstream. Luxury items were added each year. The unique style was such that it became the first (and only) vehicle ever displayed at the Louvre in Paris as an example of modern sculpture. There are now at least 65 other vehicles calling themselves SUV's. Lot's of these have no off-road capabilities at all! 1989 sales exceeded '88 sales by 41% as the SUV idea took off. Four Wheeler magazine awarded the Range Rover the "Four Wheeler of the Year" award. Rover engineers wanted something to fit the needs of the family. This search resulted in the "Discovery". The Discovery had more room and less expensive luxury features. In 1990, Discovery won Off Road & 4 Wheel Drive magazine's 4x4 of the year. In 1994 the "Defender" won Four Wheeler of the Year by Four Wheeler magazine, and a year later, the Discovery won Four Wheeler's Four Wheeler of the Year award. 1996 was the end of the Range Rover Classic (#317,615). The Vogue SE and the new 4.0 were in the showrooms. In 1997 when the competition brough out smaller SUV's, the Freelander was introduced. It promptly won 4x4 of the Year by Off Road & 4 Wheel Drive magazine. Gaydon, England saw the 30th anniversary of the Range Rover. 605 of them were there. This included prototype "Velar" models all the way to the to the rare 6x6 stretched versions. |
