CHAPELLE SAINT–PIERRE
Small chapel situated by the entrance to the harbour, decorated by Jean Cocteau.

Many towns have poetic associations: Hull with Philip Larkin, Ambleside with Wordsworth, but Villefranche-sur-Mer, the little port on the Bay of Villefranche on the French Riviera, has inspired poets down the ages, from Dante to the Rolling Stones. It lies 5km. east of Nice and 13km. west of Monaco, facing the sun in a natural amphitheatre formed by Mont Boron to the west and Cap Ferrat to the east - ‘as if in a box at the opera’, as Jean Cocteau, the town’s ‘poet laureate’, put it. To complete the theatrical illusion, the precipitous slopes of the Southern Alps form a backdrop. Cocteau called the town a source of myth and inspiration’.

We feel the picture was taken in the 1950s based on the ship and the buildings. The harbor in Villefranche has traditionally been used by the French Navy, but it was used by the United States Sixth Fleet after WW2. Consulting "Janes Fighting Ships", we feel this ship was a part of the Sixth Fleet. This is not an aerial photo but taken from the middle corniche above Villefranche.

Monte Carlo Grand Prix Monte Carlo Grand Prix is about the most famous race in the World. The Casino is magical and crowded with the most famous and richest people in the world. All of them gather for one of the major events of the year: the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix, which takes place in the streets of the city. The nights are marvelous: charity dinner or gala organized by the Grimaldi family in its Palace, dancing in night-clubs such as The Living Room, gambling in the Casino.

Antibes See Antibes, plus Biot, Juan-les-pins, Golfe-Juan, and the Vauban Fort

Antibes was a Greek fortified town named Antipolis in the 5th century BC, and later a Roman town, and always an active port for trading along the Mediterranean. Today it's an attractive and active town, popular with "foreigners" from Paris and the north of France, with non-French, and with the local population.
Menton See Menton and it's surrounding area

Thanks to a beneficial subtropical microclimate (316 cloudless days a year), winter is practically unknown in Menton. Therefore, you can enjoy a beautiful sea and the nearby sunny mountains all year round. Menton is on the borders of Italy, the Principality of Monaco and the Comté de Nice.
Beausoleil;; See Beausoleil.

Beausoleil is a neighboring town of the Principality of Monaco. It overlooks the Mediterranean Sea just above Monaco and has a beautiful year-round climate. Beausoleil is situated between the beaches and the winter sports area of the Alps.

Saint Jean Cap Ferrat Saint Jean Cap Ferrat (from Google Earth)

St Jean-Cap-Ferrat is a seaside village in a beautiful location, on a peninsula jutting into the blue Mediterranean between Nice and Monaco. We find the real beauty to be the penninsula and the lovely sheltered bay. The style, though, is much more up-market than our typical "back-country" Beyond style.
The area is heavily residential, with the very expensive homes mostly hidden behind high fences with ubiquitous signs about being protected by the local security company monopoly.

The village itself is rather small, but there are a lot of nice terrace café-restaurants; most along the port. The port, like many along this part of the coast, was once a small fishing port that's evolved into a somewhat larger yacht harbor.

EZE

In Eze, noteworthy meeting point between the mountains and the Mediterraean. At 10 mn from Nice by the Middle Corniche, RN 7, Eze-Village, the medieval city "in an eagle's nest", with its narrow streets shaded by tunnel-vaults, shelters a lot of art galleries, workshops and gastronomic restaurants. From the very top, in the ruins of a medieval castle, the exotic garden overlooks one of most beautiful panorama of the French Riviera.

Visit :
• Its baroc church with paintings in “trompe-l’œil”.
• Its white penitent chapel.

Nearby :
• The coast road along the shady shore discretly shrouds its surprising vegetation.
• The Grande Corniche Park is a direct escape route into Nature, along pretty scented pathways.

There is always a chance of storms in the Mediterranean Sea.

“We cannot go back in time. However, we can consider economic development in a different light, and put the notion of “protecting the planet” at the heart of each development project. It is essential to rise above political divisions and ask ourselves what measures we can take today for a development that is sustainable and respectful of nature.” H.S.H. Find out more about the city.
Find out about the railroad tunnel that goes to SanRemo

The official spelling of the city is Sanremo, a phonetic contraction for the name San Romolo (Saint Romolo), official saint and protector of the city, which in the local Ligurian sounds like San Rœmu. The spelling San Remo was introduced (for unknown reasons) in 1924 by the City Mayor and used in official documents during Fascism. San Remo is actually a nonsense word because there is no saint called Remo in the Catholic tradition. This form of the name is still used on some road signs and tourist information. It remains the most widely used form of the name in English.
San Remo, Market Place, Italy Market place, SanRemo, Italy (from Google Earth)

Sanremo is a city with about 57,000 inhabitants and lies on the Mediterranean coast of western Liguria in northwestern Italy. It was founded in Roman times and is now best known for being a tourist destination on the Italian Riviera and the host of several cultural events such as the Sanremo Music Festival. It is also widely accepted as the origin of the Five-card stud variant, Telesina.
Ventimiglia to San Remo, Italy

There are two tourist harbours: Porto Vecchio and the modern Porto Sole. Many boutiques and local shops can be found in the town centre. The colourful market, held on Tuesday and Saturday mornings in Piazza Eroi Sanremesi, is very famous among the people living in the Italian and French riviera.
Ventimiglia to San Remo, Italy (from Google Earth)

Sanremo enjoys special weather conditions throughout the year due to its vicinity to the Mediterranean Sea and the presence of Maritime Alps right behind the town, the highest peak (Monte Bignone) being some 1,300 m above the sea level. Temperatures range from an average of 10°C during winter (the chilliest month being January) and 23°C over the summer. Such conditions make Sanremo one of the most attractive tourist destinations of the Italian Riviera. There are plenty of tourist attractions in Sanremo that are open all year round and it can boast numerous and well-equipped sports facilities, such as a golf course and a riding ground.

Beausoleil
Beausoleil (it: Belsole) is a town and commune of the Alpes-Maritimes département, in southeastern France. It is a neighboring town of the Principality of Monaco.
Beausoleil was formerly known as Haut-Monte-Carlo.
Beausoleil adjoins the Principality of Monaco. The "border" is city streets. One knows which town they are in by the sidewalk (Beausoleil has sidewalk tiles with a sun face). Beausoleil overlooks the Mediterranean Sea just above Monaco and has a beautiful year-round climate. Beausoleil is situated between the beaches and the winter sports area of the Alps.

Ventimiglia, Italy to Menton, France

The closest airport to Sanremo is in France, the Côte d'Azur International Airport airport in Nice, only 45 minutes away by car or train. The railway also passes through the city and connects it to the other Ligurian cities, as well as with Nice, Milan, Turin and Rome.

The railway tracks, were once located right on the coastline, very close to the sea, allowing travelers to admire the beauty of it. The track has been moved further north and underground, speeding up rail transportation. Consequently, the main train station has also been relocated and it is now next to the City Hall. Today an ongoing project, carried by Area 24, is dealing with the task of refurbishing the old area once occupied by the tracks and converting it into a biking route and a pedestrian area.
Ventimiglia, Italy to Menton, France (from Google Earth)

The city is connected to Genoa and to Ventimiglia, the border city with France, by the A10 motorway, whose last part is also known as the Autostrada dei Fiori ("Motorway of Flowers"). It is built of a large number of elevated sections with viaducts and tunnels and gives a panoramic view of the coast. The A10 Autostrada seamlessly joins the French A8 autoroute at the state border between Ventimiglia and Menton. Together these national routes are part of the European route E80. Both the French and Italian motorways are toll roads.
