ec-bp.com The Forum for Supply Chain Integration
ec-bp was established in 2005 as the advocate for lowering the barriers to the adoption of EDI, and our email newsletter has been published every month since that time. Our focus has expanded beyond EDI to encompas the full gamut of supply chain practices and technologies. In addition, our readership has grown to become the largest of any similarly focused publication, and has expanded to include more than 90,000 professionals involved in nearly every aspect of the supply chain. Today’s supply chain is more than simple transport of EDI documents. The complexity of maintaining compliance with trading partners, managing the ever increasing amount of data, and analyzing that data to drive constant improvement in processes and service take supply chain professionals far beyond the basics of mapping EDI documents. |

XML in Your Weather
Last year I developed a list of Ten Unique Ideas, Facts and Uses for XML. I just recently realized another one that impacts all of us every day. METAR is the most popular format in the world for the transmission of weather data. It is highly standardized through International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which allows it to be understood throughout most of the world. The name METAR has its origins in the French phrase "message d’observation météorologique pour l’aviation régulière" ("Meteorological observation message for routine aviation") and would therefore be a contraction of MÉTéorologique Aviation Régulière. A METAR weather report is predominantly used by pilots in fulfillment of a part of a pre-flight weather briefing, and by meteorologists, who use aggregated METAR information to assist in weather forecasting. Although the general format of METAR reports is a global standard, the specific fields used within that format vary somewhat between general international usage and usage within North America. Note that there may be minor differences between countries using the international codes as there are between those using the North American conventions. |

Ski Trains to North Creek, NY Follow a new railroad into the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. They run tourist trains, dinner trains, and even a ski train from Saratoga to North Creek. They want to reactivate the railroad to a mine that was closed over 20 years ago. New technology and a new attitude maybe just the right combination. |

One of the greatest vacation spots is
Nice, in the French Côte d'Azur. While you are in Nice, how about a great ferry ride to Corsica? Ajaccio is the most important ferry port on Corsica Island. The white city of Ajaccio lies in a semicircle on the bay, and is set against the backdrop of wooded hills. The ferry port area, fringed by palm trees, is filled with yachts and lined with colourful houses. As the Ajaccio ferry port terminal is located near the centre of Ajaccio, there are many shops and restaurants within walking distance. At the port itself you will find a convenience store and a cafe. Meteo France provides weather, weather forecast and holiday weather for Ajaccio |

Tsunamis
lot of good lessons and information all about tsunamis What is a tsunami? On October 16, 1979 in Nice, France; an undersea landslide generated 2 tsunamis and resulted in several deaths. This "submarine landslide" in the Mediterranean caused a tsunami that struck the French Riviera without warning. The sea retreated 975 feet before rushing back in the form of two 32-foot-high waves along the 37 miles of effected coastline. It was what scientists refer to as a "near-source tsunami." Sometimes, the only indication of such a tsunami comes when water recedes quickly from the shore. The first wave hits within minutes, allowing no time for any kind of official warning. Near-source tsunamis are accompanied by ground-shaking, which, if severe enough, can cause evacuation routes to become blocked by debris. Tsunami! is hosted and maintained at the University of Washington by the Department of Earth and Space Sciences. This website is dedicated to providing general information about tsunamis, their causes and history as well as what to do in case of a tsunami. Surviving a Tsunami - Lessons from Chile, Hawaii, and Japan (If you read nothing else, read this) This is a USGS publication (available online) that details how to survive a tsunami. It is based on personal accounts of the tsunami generated by the 1960 magnitude-9.5 earthquake in Chile. Pacific Warning Center West Coast and Alaska warning Center |

“We cannot go back in time. However, we can consider economic development in a different light, and put the notion of “protecting the planet” at the heart of each development project. It is essential to rise above political divisions and ask ourselves what measures we can take today for a development that is sustainable and respectful of nature.” H.S.H. A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the earth. When pressure builds up, eruptions occur. Gases and rock shoot up through the opening and spill over or fill the air with lava fragments. Eruptions can cause lateral blasts, lava flows, hot ash flows, mudslides, avalanches, falling ash and floods. Volcano eruptions have been known to knock down entire forests. An erupting volcano can trigger tsunamis, flashfloods, earthquakes, mudflows and rockfalls. More than 80 percent of the earth's surface is volcanic in origin. The sea floor and some mountains were formed by countless volcanic eruptions. Gaseous emissions from volcano formed the earth's atmosphere.
The word volcano comes from the little island of Vulcano in the Mediterranean Sea off Sicily. Centuries ago, the people living in this area believed that Vulcano was the chimney of the forge of Vulcan( Lat. Volcanus)--the blacksmith of the Roman gods. Réunion Island Volcanos A basaltic shield volcano, Piton de la Fournaise, forms the SE half of Réunion Island, 800 km E of Madagascar. It has been one of the most active oceanic volcanoes, with more than 100 eruptions in the last 300 years and there have been between two and four eruptions annually since 1998. Much of its more than 530,000 year history overlapped with eruptions of the deeply dissected Piton des Neiges shield volcano to the NW. Three calderas formed at about 250,000, 65,000, and less than 5,000 years ago by progressive eastward slumping of the volcano. Numerous pyroclastic cones dot the floor of the calderas and their outer flanks. |

We are working on our list of Golf Hotels and Resorts
Some of these are well known because of PGA Tour events held there. Pinehurst; The Greenbrier; and Pebble Beach certainly belong in this catagory. Others are located in towns with even more than golf as an attraction. In this Category is The Otesaga in Cooperstown, New York; Basin Harbor Club on Lake Champlain. |
